Many OTs are so focused on clients that they rarely pause to check in with themselves. The OT Career Check was created to give clinicians a simple moment of reflection. It’s a short, meaningful way to understand where you’re at, what’s going well, and what might need attention. This article walks through what the quiz is, why I built it, and how it helps OTs reconnect with balance, purpose, and confidence in their work.
What the OT Career Check Is
The OT Career Check is a short reflective quiz designed for occupational therapists at any stage of their career. It takes a few minutes and gives you a clear snapshot of where you sit on the spectrum of Surviving, Coasting, or Thriving.
Underneath that simple scale sits something deeper. Each result gives personalised insights across six key areas that shape the OT experience:
- Work–life balance
- Fulfilment and purpose
- Growth and support
- Workload and flexibility
- Overall wellbeing
- Future direction and intention
The goal isn’t to judge you. It’s to help you see yourself clearly, without pressure, and to offer gentle guidance that feels achievable in real life.

Why I Created It
As a community OT, I kept hearing the same story. OTs were tired, overwhelmed, or unsure if they were still on the right path. Others felt steady but weren’t sure how to keep growing. And a small number were thriving but wanted to protect the progress they’d made.
I realised we needed something simple and human to help OTs pause and reflect. Not another PD course. Not another framework. Just a moment of honesty you can have with yourself. The quiz became that moment.
What the Quiz Helps You Notice
Your current rhythm
Whether you’re surviving, coasting, or thriving isn’t just a label. It reflects how your daily rhythm feels, how sustainable it is, and what support you might need.
What’s feeding or draining your energy
Every OT has patterns. Some help you stay steady. Others slowly chip away at wellbeing. The quiz highlights these patterns so you can respond early instead of waiting for burnout.
What matters most to you right now
Your values, your interests, and even your sense of purpose can shift over time. The quiz helps you reconnect with why you became an OT and what you want your work to look like moving forward.
A Reflection from Me (Lisa)
There was a moment earlier this year when I was driving between clients feeling stretched thin. Nothing was “wrong,” but nothing felt clear either. I sat in my car and thought, “If one of my clients shared this with me, what would I ask them?”
Probably something like, “How are you really going? And what do you need?”
That moment reminded me how easy it is for OTs to lose themselves in the pace of community work. The OT Career Check came from wanting to give all of us a simple way to pause, breathe, and reconnect with ourselves, the work we do and why we do what we do. Remember, it’s not a sign of weakness to take a breath.
